Hans Werner Aufrecht was a German engineer and co-founder of AMG, a high-performance division of Mercedes-Benz. He was born on July 28, 1938, in Großaspach, Germany. After completing his education in mechanical engineering, he worked at Mercedes-Benz as a racing engineer. In 1967, he founded AMG with Erhard Melcher.
Under Aufrecht's leadership, AMG became famous for modifying Mercedes-Benz cars to create high-performance vehicles. The company's first success came in 1971 when its modified Mercedes-Benz 300SEL won the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps race. In 1990, Mercedes-Benz acquired a controlling stake in AMG, and it became its high-performance division.
Aufrecht retired from AMG in 2005 but remained a consultant to the company. He received numerous awards for his contributions to the automotive industry, including the Order of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg. He passed away on October 15, 2018, at the age of 80.
